Greenhouse Gas Accounting

Establishing and verifying a carbon footprint baseline is becoming more and more important in today’s competitive marketplace. Increasingly, organizations are seeking to first understand, and then reduce, their carbon footprint. And it is not just multinational corporations that are taking on the challenge of calculating their total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; smaller companies and institutions are realizing that GHG accounting is a very important aspect of risk management. Sieben Energy Associates (SEA) works with clients both large and small.

Depending on your reporting requirements, we use various international protocols to calculate your carbon footprint. For example, we can classify your GHG emissions according to Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 as defined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol developed by the World Resources Institute and World Business Council for Sustainable Development. Our typical GHG accounting project is an ongoing assignment where we partner with our client over time to help them integrated sustainability practices into their business. We collect all available energy information and conduct an analysis of our client’s GHG inventory. Then we monitor emissions over time, capturing and reporting the performance metrics that matter most to our client. We are often further engaged to help our clients reduce their GHG emissions.

Our greenhouse gas accounting team offers much more than a simple set of numbers. SEA has developed a comprehensive approach to GHG accounting. Because we are a fully integrated professional energy services firm, we complement the basic footprint calculations with customized metrics, reports, and software tools, as well as recommendations for reducing emissions over time.

The most direct and least expensive route to reducing GHG emissions is often via improvements in energy efficiency. For clients who wish to actively reduce their carbon footprint, SEA’s energy efficiency team is available to conduct energy audits and other energy efficiency services to help mitigate emissions.
