CHICAGO, IL – The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) recently awarded the 120 North LaSalle Street Building, Chicago, Illinois, with a prestigious certification that recognizes their strong energy and sustainability efforts. Sieben Energy Associates (SEA)—a Chicago-based energy and sustainability services firm—was the consultant on the successful 12-month project that concluded in January 2010. The 120 North LaSalle Street Building is managed by Lincoln Property Company (LPC).
The Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) granted 120 North LaSalle Street with LEED EB O&M (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings Operations and Maintenance) certification at the Gold level. According to the USGBC website, LEED provides both new and existing buildings with “practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.”
Sherri Green, Property Manager at 120 North LaSalle Street, acknowledged the dedication and expertise that were essential to the positive outcome: “Achieving LEED EB O&M Gold is a monumental achievement that fully exemplifies the vision, hard work and perseverance” of everybody involved.
This certification is in line with LPC’s overall energy and sustainability strategy. As Green observed, “Lincoln Property Company has been the driving force behind the on-going development of the Building’s sustainability program.” LPC began to adopt energy efficiency measures years ago by reducing their lighting load, installing motion sensors, and replacing motors and drives with high-performance units.
The SEA team that guided the Gold certification process from start to finish included Jerry Burin (Principal), Project Manager Todd Edwards (LEED AP O&M), and Energy Engineer Yogesh Mardikar, PhD, (LEED AP). SEA staff worked closely with building and LPC staff, ensuring that the numerous application tasks were completed, documented, and submitted to the USGBC quickly and accurately. As Green affirmed, “Sieben Energy, whom we retained as our LEED consultant, steadfastly kept the project on task.”
SEA was proud to partner with the building and LPC to help them achieve their goal of Gold certification. “It was a pleasure working with the team at the 120 North LaSalle Street Building,” said Edwards. “They are sustainability minded and action orientated—a great combination.”
When reviewing 120 North LaSalle Street’s energy consumption, SEA provided insight and analysis regarding the implementation of numerous energy-saving measures. Such measures not only contributed to achieving Gold certification, but also reap the financial benefit of reduced monthly energy costs.
Green noted that earning LEED EB O&M Gold “is not the end for us” but is simply a major step in an unending process of responsible building management. As she explained, “The 120 North LaSalle Street Building continues to explore new energy efficient, water efficient and environmentally sustainable programs to keep our tenants comfortable and to provide a positive impact on the environment for future generations.”
Sieben Energy Associates shares Green’s perspective on the importance of improving building efficiency. With over 70 additional LEED projects either certified or registered to apply for certification, SEA is committed to helping all of its clients, like LPC, achieve their energy and sustainability goals.
