ASHRAE Recognizes Sieben Energy Associates with Excellence in Engineering Award
Saturday, December 01, 2012 (566 reads)

CHICAGO, IL - Sieben Energy Associates (SEA) received an Excellence in Engineering Award from the Illinois Chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) for successfully completing the retro-commissioning of the One East Wacker Drive building in downtown Chicago, recently renamed The Kemper Building.

SEA is honored to be among the nine winners of the 42nd Annual ASHRAE Excellence in Engineering awards. The retro-commissioning project resulted in verified annual electric and natural gas reductions of 10% and 12% respectively.   The retro-commissioning project, launched in January 2011, was led by Phil Keuhn, SEA Director of Energy Efficiency, and supported by Chris Bibby, SEA Energy Efficiency Engineer, and was completed in April 2012.
Retro-commissioning, sometimes called “existing building commissioning” is a process that analyzes a building’s energy-consuming systems, equipment, and operations in search of low-cost operational improvements. After energy reduction measures are implemented, the retro-commissioning team measures and verifies the actual success of its solutions.

Elevating Energy Efficiency in Chicago: SEA Partners with Argonne National Laboratory, Others to Transform Downtown
Friday, September 02, 2011 (1017 reads)

September 2, 2011

ARGONNE, IL – Sieben Energy Associates (SEA) is partnering with the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne), Georgia Institute of Technology, and Skidmore Owings & Merrill on an important assignment that could bring sweeping change to the Chicago Loop. Many existing buildings are prime candidates for energy efficiency retrofits, but a wide variety of barriers—structural, financial, behavioral—prevent projects from moving beyond the proposal stage.

Argonne, SEA, and project partners are seeking to upend that paradigm by developing decision-making tools to overcome those barriers. If successful, the end result will be a greener city center, and Chicago’s approach will serve as an example to other major cities. In supporting the project, SEA is contributing energy engineering expertise and leveraging its extensive knowledge of the Chicago building landscape.
