Building Commissioning Engineer

SEA has been a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) since 1999 and achieved its first LEED project certification in 2003. SEA is one of the most active LEED Consulting and Commissioning consultants in the Midwest with over 40 LEED projects fully certified. SEA engineering staff has been awarded ASHRAE’s Commissioning Process Management Provider designation.

Job Description

SEA is currently looking for either commissioning engineers with two plus years of commissioning experience or engineers with a strong mechanical background and in-depth controls and construction knowledge with three plus years experience. Non-degreed applicants with five plus years experience in non-residential construction management, commercial HVAC installation and repair, or building automation and controls experience are considered if they possess project management and customer relations skill sets. LEED AP certification is highly desirable. Experience in performing energy audits and energy analysis is also highly desirable.

Position Responsibilities  

  • Interact with client staff, client principals, building construction management teams and building construction trades
  • Review and optimize building control systems and EMS performance
  • Analyze mechanical systems
  • Review construction documents and develop checklists, tests, and plans
  • Conduct commissioning meetings
  • Facilitate issue resolution
  • Conduct site observations
  • Observe third party testing and equipment start up
  • Direct and/or conduct functional testing
  • Perform measurement and verification
  • Develop clear and concise written reports that convey technical information in narrative checklist or tabular form
  • Manage assigned projects to deliver a quality service on time, and on budget
     

Required Technical Credentials/Skills

  • Degree in mechanical or architectural engineering preferred; other relevant degrees will be considered; non-degreed applicants may also be considered under certain circumstances as described above
  • Effective management of commissioning projects to deliver quality services on time and on budget
  • In-depth understanding of the building construction process and the following building systems: HVAC, electrical, building automation/controls
  • Capability to inspect and functionally test existing energy consuming equipment and diagnose problems
  • Experience troubleshooting complex mechanical systems and controls
  • Ability to obtain and analyze field data and building automation system trend data
  • Thorough understanding of construction drawings and specifications
  • Ability to compile financial and statistical analyses
  • Successful facilitation of commissioning team meetings

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Exceptional problem solving, time management and decision-making skills
  • Self-directed and self-motivated with the ability to succeed in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with small teams and to maintain client relationships
  • Experience communicating effectively with design teams, construction managers, and building construction trades
  • Writing of technical and non-technical reports
  • Active management of multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access
  • Punctual, reliable, detailed oriented, task oriented, and organized
  • Desire to learn continuously, work more effectively, and enhance technical and professional skills
  • Ability and desire to mentor and teach other team members

Desirable Credentials/Skills

  • Three plus years commissioning experience
  • Commissioning Industry Certification
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) credential
  • LEED AP accreditation
  • Illinois Professional Engineer (PE) License
  • Other HVAC or building construction and management certifications or credentials
